September: Our Month of Harvesting Souls and Fulfilling the Great Commission
2 Peter 1:10–15
Beloved, Jesus willingly went to the cross so that we could be called and chosen. Now Peter, knowing his own departure was near, urges us with holy urgency: make that calling and election sure. In a world where families drift, churches grow complacent, and communities forget eternal things, diligence in growth keeps us firm, fruitful, and focused on the harvest. Let us take hold of these truths today!
1. Secure Your Calling with Diligence
“Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure” (σπουδάζω—earnest, zealous effort; κλῆσις—divine invitation; ἐκλογή—God’s choosing; βεβαία—firm, guaranteed). By adding the virtues of verses 5–9 we confirm what God has already done.
Supporting Scriptures: God has saved us and called us with a holy calling according to His own purpose and grace, not our works (2 Timothy 1:9). All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose—those He predestined, He also called, justified, and will glorify (Romans 8:28–30).
Jesus secured our salvation by His blood; we now secure our assurance by obedient growth.
Life Application: In strained homes and busy lives, choose daily diligence over spiritual drift.
Repetition: Secure your calling—grow and stand firm.
2. Stand Firm and Never Fall
“For if ye do these things, ye shall never fall” (οὐ μὴ πταίσητε ποτε—strong double negative: you will never stumble). Continual growth anchors us through every trial.
Supporting Scriptures: He is able to keep you from falling and present you faultless before His glory with great joy (Jude 24). The steps of the godly are ordered by the Lord; though they fall, they will not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholds them (Psalm 37:23–24).
Christ endured the cross without failing; His power keeps us from falling.
Life Application: When family conflicts or community pressures come, keep adding virtue and love—you will not collapse.
Repetition: Stand firm—you will never fall.
3. Supply the Rich Entrance
“For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” Growth prepares a rich, wide welcome into glory.
Supporting Scriptures: A crown of righteousness is laid up for all who love His appearing (2 Timothy 4:8). The faithful servant hears, “Well done… enter into the joy of your Lord” (Matthew 25:21).
Jesus opened the kingdom by His death and resurrection; diligence prepares our abundant entrance.
Life Application: Live today with eternity in view—build families and churches that reflect the coming kingdom.
Repetition: Supply the rich entrance—advance with joy.
4. Stir Up One Another Continually
Peter says he will not be negligent to put them always in remembrance and stir them up (διεγείρω—thoroughly arouse). As long as he is in this tabernacle (σκήνωμα—temporary tent, the body), he will remind them of the present truth.
Supporting Scriptures: Consider one another to stir up love and good works, not forsaking meeting together (Hebrews 10:24–25). Remind the believers of these things and charge them before the Lord (2 Timothy 2:14).
Jesus constantly reminded and strengthened His disciples; we must do the same.
Life Application: In churches that grow cold and communities that forget, keep stirring faith by word and example.
Repetition: Stir up one another—keep the fire burning.
5. Serve Until Your Departure
Peter knew the Lord Jesus had shown him that he must shortly put off his tabernacle. Therefore he labored so that after his departure believers would still remember these things.
Supporting Scriptures: Jesus told Peter that in his old age he would stretch out his hands and be led where he did not want to go, signifying the death by which he would glorify God, then said, “Follow Me” (John 21:18–19). Paul declared that the time of his departure was at hand; he had fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:6–7).
Jesus finished His course on the cross; Peter finished his by faithful reminding.
Life Application: Live so your legacy in family, church, and community continues to harvest souls after you are gone.
Repetition: Serve until your departure—leave a lasting testimony.
Beloved, Jesus paid the full price so our calling is sure. Now make it firm by diligence, growth, and constant reminder. This September, secure your election, stand unshaken, pursue the rich entrance, stir up the saints, and serve until the end. Build strong families, strengthen the church, impact the world, and fulfill the Great Commission. The fields are white—make your calling sure and go harvest!
