Topic: Sure Hope in the Promise of His Coming
Subtitle: Stirred Saints Stand Steadfast

Beloved, open with me to 2 Peter 3:1-16. With true prophetic urgency and tenderness, the apostle Peter writes to awaken pure minds. He reminds us of the words of the holy prophets and the commandment of the apostles so that we will not be shaken by scoffers. The same Jesus who willingly died for our salvation is coming again. His delay is not failure—it is longsuffering love that still seeks the lost. Let this truth stir us to holy living today.

1. Stirring Pure Minds by Remembrance (2 Peter 3:1-2)

Peter writes to “stir up” (diegeirō—to awaken or arouse) their pure minds by way of remembrance, calling them to be mindful of the words spoken by the holy prophets and the commandment of the apostles of the Lord and Saviour. Parallel truth appears in Jude 17 (paraphrased: remember the words spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ) and 2 Timothy 1:6 (paraphrased: stir up the gift of God which is in you).

Life application: In our families and churches we regularly rehearse the pure gospel so that no competing voice can displace it.

Repetition: The Lord is not slow concerning His promise.
Jesus died and rose so that our minds could be kept pure. Live Christlike by keeping His Word fresh in daily conversation and discipleship.

2. Standing Against Scoffers in the Last Days (2 Peter 3:3-4)

In the last days scoffers (empaiktai—mockers) will come, walking after their own lusts and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming?” They use the apparent delay to turn hearts away. Parallel warnings sound in Jude 18 (paraphrased: in the last time there will be mockers walking after their own ungodly lusts) and 2 Timothy 3:1-5 (paraphrased: in the last days perilous times will come… lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God).

Life application: When culture mocks the return of Christ, we answer with quiet faithfulness in home, workplace, and community.

Repetition: The Lord is not slow concerning His promise.
Jesus endured the mockery of the cross so that we might stand unashamed. True prophetic living refuses to let scoffing silence our hope.

3. Seeing God’s Word Proven in Flood and Fire (2 Peter 3:5-7)

Scoffers willingly forget that by the word of God the heavens and earth were formed, and the world of that time perished by water. The present heavens and earth are reserved for fire. Parallel confirmation is found in Genesis 7:11-12 (paraphrased: the fountains of the great deep were broken up and the windows of heaven were opened) and Matthew 24:37-39 (paraphrased: as the days of Noah were, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be).

Life application: We teach our children and lead our communities with confidence that God’s Word has never failed and will never fail.

Repetition: The Lord is not slow concerning His promise.
The same Lord who judged by water and will judge by fire is the One who bore judgment in our place on the cross. Trust His proven Word.

4. Settling in the Lord’s Longsuffering Heart (2 Peter 3:8-9)

One day is with the Lord as a thousand years. The Lord is not slow concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering (makrothumia—patient endurance) toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. Parallel grace shines in 1 Timothy 2:4 (paraphrased: God desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth) and Exodus 34:6 (paraphrased: the Lord, merciful and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in goodness).

Life application: When answers seem delayed, we interpret the wait as God’s mercy still reaching family members, colleagues, and neighbours.

Repetition: The Lord is not slow concerning His promise.
Jesus willingly waited through the agony of the cross so that we might be saved. Live with prophetic patience that still invites others to Him.

5. Seeking Holy Living as We Await the New Creation (2 Peter 3:10-16)

The day of the Lord will come as a thief; the elements will melt and the earth will be burned. Therefore we ought to live in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, and looking for new heavens and a new earth wherein dwells righteousness. Be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless. Parallel calls appear in 1 Thessalonians 5:2-6 (paraphrased: the day of the Lord comes as a thief… let us watch and be sober) and Revelation 21:1-4 (paraphrased: I saw a new heaven and a new earth… God will wipe away every tear).

Life application: In every sphere—family, church, community, and the wider world—we pursue pure lives that prepare us and others for His appearing.

Repetition: The Lord is not slow concerning His promise.
Jesus died, rose, and is coming again so that we may be found without spot. Walk in holiness, disciple the nations, and live Christlike with joyful expectation. Amen.
