¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, ²⁰ idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, ²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. ²² But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, ²³ meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. — Galatians 5:19–23

Opening Thought

Every believer faces a daily choice: to yield to the desires of the flesh or to walk in the Spirit. Our decisions shape our character and our testimony before the world.

Introduction

Paul's letter to the Galatians addresses the tension between legalism and the liberty found in Christ. In these verses, Paul draws a sharp contrast between a life controlled by the flesh and a life led by the Spirit. This passage invites each of us to examine the fruit our lives are bearing and to pursue the character of Christ through the Spirit's power.

Background of the Text

Paul wrote to the Galatians to correct false teachings that insisted on adherence to the Mosaic Law for salvation. He emphasizes that true freedom and righteousness come through faith in Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit, not human effort. Galatians 5 outlines the practical evidence of living by the Spirit, contrasting it with the destructive results of living by the flesh.

Jesus Christ in This Passage

Jesus Christ is the perfect model of the fruit of the Spirit. He embodied love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance throughout His life and ministry. By abiding in Christ, believers receive the Holy Spirit, who enables them to reflect His character and overcome the flesh.

Conclusion

Galatians 5:19–23 calls us to reject the works of the flesh and embrace the fruit of the Spirit. As we walk with Jesus and yield to the Holy Spirit, our lives will display God's transforming power, drawing others to Him and securing our place in His kingdom.

"Lord, I choose today to walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Search my heart and reveal anything that grieves You. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit, and let the fruit of love, joy, peace, and all Your virtues grow visibly in my life. In Jesus' name. Amen."
