Topic: The Cost and Commitment of Following Jesus Christ
Introduction
Following Jesus is a deeply personal and sometimes challenging journey. In Luke 9:57–62, Jesus meets several individuals who express a desire to follow Him, but He responds with words that reveal the true cost and commitment required. This passage invites us to reflect on our priorities, our willingness to let go, and the wholehearted devotion Jesus calls for.
Opening Thought
The decision to follow Jesus is one of the most significant choices a person can make. It goes beyond a simple declaration or momentary enthusiasm; it requires a willingness to surrender personal comfort, reorder priorities, and commit wholeheartedly to His calling. In Luke 9:57–62, Jesus challenges would-be followers to count the true cost of discipleship. His words remind us that following Him is not always easy or convenient, but it is a journey that leads to lasting purpose and fulfillment. As we reflect on this passage, we are invited to examine our own readiness to respond to His call with undivided devotion.
Background
This encounter takes place as Jesus is traveling toward Jerusalem, fully aware of the suffering and sacrifice that await Him. Along the way, He meets people who express interest in following Him, and He uses their responses to teach important lessons about discipleship.
Seeing Jesus in the Passage
In these verses, Jesus is portrayed as both compassionate and uncompromising. He welcomes followers but is honest about the demands of true discipleship. He models complete surrender and calls His followers to do the same.
1. The Cost of Following Jesus — Luke 9:57–58
"Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest." — Luke 9:57
Jesus replies that even animals have homes, but He Himself has nowhere to rest. He highlights that following Him is not a path of comfort or material security. He Himself lives a life of sacrifice and uncertainty, showing that discipleship may require leaving behind earthly comforts and embracing a life of faith and dependence on God.
"Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." — Matthew 8:19–20
Life Application: Consider what comforts or securities you may need to surrender to truly follow Jesus. Are you willing to trust Him even when the journey is uncomfortable or uncertain?
2. The Priority of the Kingdom — Luke 9:59–60
"Follow me." But he said, "Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father." Jesus responded, "Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God." — Luke 9:59–60
Jesus teaches that the call to follow Him takes precedence over even the most important family obligations. While caring for family is important, the call to proclaim the kingdom of God is urgent and cannot be delayed.
"Anyone who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me." — Matthew 10:37
Life Application: Evaluate your priorities. Are there good things in your life that are keeping you from fully embracing God's call? How can you put the kingdom of God first in your daily decisions?
3. Wholehearted Commitment — Luke 9:61–62
"Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house." Jesus said, "No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God." — Luke 9:61–62
Jesus uses the image of ploughing a field to illustrate that discipleship requires undivided attention and commitment. Looking back or longing for the past can distract and hinder spiritual progress. True followers must move forward with focus and resolve.
"Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead…" — Philippians 3:13–14
Life Application: Reflect on areas where you might be looking back or holding onto the past. What steps can you take to move forward in faith, fully committed to the path Jesus sets before you?
Conclusion
Jesus invites us into a relationship that demands our all — our comfort, our priorities, and our focus. He does not promise an easy road, but He promises His presence and purpose. As we consider these verses, let us examine our own willingness to follow Him, no matter the cost, and trust that He is worth every sacrifice.
"Lord, I choose to follow You — not halfway, not when it is convenient, but completely. Help me to surrender every comfort, every distraction, and every backward glance. I put my hand to the plough today, trusting that the path You have set before me leads to life. In Jesus' name. Amen."
