Stress Bumps

By Bishop Samson Amajene

Today's Thoughts — Obedience Series

Saturday, August 17, 2024  ·  By Bishop Samson Amajene

Text: Philippians 4:6–7 (NLT)

Topic: Stress Bumps

"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." — Philippians 4:6–7 (NLT)

Bishop Samson Amajene emphasized that we are currently living in a time overwhelmed with stress and anxiety. Many individuals are facing trials, temptations, and discouragement that lead to various issues — including mental illness, emotional abuse, domestic violence, and fluctuations in blood pressure. Bishop Amajene noted with concern that worry and anxiety have led to tragic consequences due to our failure to incorporate what he refers to as "stress bumps" into our daily lives.

To avoid sudden breakdowns, he encouraged everyone to intentionally create moments of respite. Celebrating milestones, attending social events, and taking vacations are essential practices to help alleviate the accumulating tension of everyday life. He stated that stress will not simply disappear — it requires deliberate efforts to plan for these stress bumps in our journey. Stress primarily originates from our thoughts about challenges that feel unmanageable.

Common Stress Triggers

Bishop Amajene identified several common stress triggers:

  • Chronic illness or injury
  • Emotional issues such as depression, anxiety, anger, grief, guilt, and low self-esteem
  • The burden of caring for elderly or sick family members
  • Traumatic events such as natural disasters, theft, rape, or violence against oneself or loved ones
  • Financial challenges
  • Engaging in sinful activities

He underscored the importance of planning events that facilitate relaxation amid long work hours. As daunting as these stress triggers can be, the Bishop reminded us that we cannot simply overcome them by ceasing to worry. Instead, he urged everyone to engage in prayer about their struggles — utilizing the Word of God as a source of peace and reassurance.

"Lord, in the midst of every stress and pressure, teach me to bring everything to You in prayer, and let Your peace — which surpasses all understanding — guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Amen."
