Introduction
Life is full of challenges, especially for those who seek to follow Jesus Christ. In a world where faith is often mocked and temptations abound, how do we remain steadfast? Jude, the brother of James, writes to believers facing such times, offering wisdom, encouragement, and a call to action. Let us explore his words, see how Jesus is present in this passage, and discover how we can live them out today.
Background
Jude's letter addresses early Christians threatened by false teachers and moral decay. He urges believers to remember the teachings of the apostles and to cling to their faith in Christ. The passage (Jude 1:17–23) provides practical steps for spiritual survival and growth in difficult times.
1. Remember the Warnings — Jude 1:17–19
"But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; how that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit." — Jude 1:17–19
Jude reminds believers that the apostles, following Jesus' own warnings (Matthew 24:11–12), foretold that mockers and ungodly people would arise. These individuals follow their own desires and create division.
Picture Jesus:
Jesus Himself warned of false prophets and those who would lead others astray. He called His followers to discernment and steadfastness.

Life Application: Don't be surprised by opposition or the presence of false teachings. Stay rooted in Scripture and remember Jesus' words. When you encounter cynicism or division, respond with the wisdom and patience Christ modeled.
2. Build Up Your Faith — Jude 1:20
"But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost." — Jude 1:20
Jude encourages believers to actively strengthen their faith through prayer and spiritual growth.
Picture Jesus:
Jesus often withdrew to pray and encouraged His disciples to do the same (Luke 5:16). He modeled a life of dependence on the Father.

Life Application: Make time each day to pray and study God's Word. Like building a house, faith grows stronger with consistent effort. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide and empower your prayers.
3. Keep Yourself in God's Love — Jude 1:21
"Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life." — Jude 1:21
Jude calls believers to remain in the sphere of God's love, always looking forward to Christ's mercy and the promise of eternal life.
Picture Jesus:
Jesus is the embodiment of God's love and mercy. He welcomed sinners, forgave freely, and promised eternal life to those who believe in Him (John 3:16).

Life Application: Let God's love shape your actions and attitudes. When you feel discouraged, remember the hope you have in Christ. Extend the same love and mercy to others that Jesus has shown you.
4. Show Compassion and Rescue Others — Jude 1:22–23
"And of some have compassion, making a difference: and others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh." — Jude 1:22–23
Jude urges believers to respond differently to those struggling in faith: show compassion to some, and urgently rescue others — being careful not to be drawn into sin.
Picture Jesus:
Jesus showed compassion to the lost (Luke 19:10) and confronted sin with truth and grace (John 8:11).

Life Application: Reach out to those who are doubting or struggling. Sometimes gentle compassion is needed; other times, a firm warning. Always act with love, but guard your own heart from being influenced by sin.
5. Trust in Christ's Keeping Power — Jude 1:24
"Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy." — Jude 1:24
Jude closes with assurance: God is able to keep us from stumbling and will present us blameless through Jesus Christ.
Picture Jesus:
Jesus is our Savior and Advocate. He intercedes for us and will one day present us before the Father, clothed in His righteousness (Hebrews 7:25; 1 John 2:1).

Life Application: Rest in the security of Christ's love and power. When you feel weak, remember that Jesus is strong. Trust Him to finish the work He started in you.
Conclusion
Jude's message is both a warning and a comfort. In a world filled with challenges to our faith, we are called to remember Christ's words, build up our faith, remain in God's love, show compassion, and trust in Jesus' power to keep us. By following these steps, we not only survive but thrive as followers of Christ.
"Lord, in a world that mocks and divides, help me to stand firm. Build my faith through prayer and Your Word. Keep me in Your love, give me compassion for the lost, and let me rest in the assurance that You are able to keep me from falling. In Jesus' name. Amen."
