Topic: Standing Firm in Exceeding Grace Amid Opposition
Text: Nehemiah 6:1–19
Dear beloved in Christ, grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I am Bishop Samson Amajene, a servant of Christ from Grace Gospel Church. Today, in this month of Exceeding Grace, we draw strength from Nehemiah's story. Around 445 BC, this faithful leader returned from Persia to rebuild Jerusalem's ruined walls. Despite fierce opposition, the work was completed in just 52 days because God's people prayed, worked together, and obeyed His Word. Nehemiah faced enemies like Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem — tactics that mirror the devil's schemes today. Yet, through exceeding grace, victory came.
Here are five expository points to inspire, encourage, edify, comfort, and empower you:
Five Expository Points
1. Recognise the Enemy's Persistent Opposition
Nehemiah 6:1–4
When the wall was nearly complete, enemies invited Nehemiah to "meet together" on the plain of Ono — four times — to distract and harm him. He refused wisely: "I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down."
Supporting Scriptures:
1 Peter 5:8 — "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."
Ephesians 6:11 — "Put on the full armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes."
Life Application: In today's world, families face division through gossip, churches encounter internal politics, and communities see betrayal for personal gain. Do not entertain invitations or alliances that pull you from God's assignment. Use wisdom to say "no" politely and stay focused.
The enemy repeats tactics — do not grow weary in resisting.
Jesus, our ultimate example, faced constant opposition yet stayed on mission to the cross, willingly dying for our salvation so we might have exceeding grace to finish strong.
2. Reject Slander and False Accusations
Nehemiah 6:5–9
Enemies sent an open letter accusing Nehemiah of rebellion and kingship ambitions to frighten him and weaken the work. He replied truthfully and prayed, "Now strengthen my hands."
Supporting Scriptures:
Isaiah 54:17 — "No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you."
2 Timothy 2:15 — "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed."
Life Application: In families, workplaces, churches, and global media, slander spreads quickly via social platforms and whispers. Guard your heart, speak truth in love, and pray for strength. God's exceeding grace turns accusations into testimonies.
Fear is a weapon — counter it with focused prayer and continued labour.
Just as Jesus endured false witnesses and betrayal yet prayed for His accusers, He empowers us to overcome character attacks for the sake of souls.
3. Discern False Prophets and Hidden Traps
Nehemiah 6:10–14
A hired "prophet" urged Nehemiah to hide in the temple out of fear. Nehemiah discerned the lie, refused to sin through cowardice, and prayed against the plot.
Supporting Scriptures:
1 John 4:1 — "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God."
Matthew 7:15 — "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves."
Life Application: Today, in churches and communities, smooth voices may promote compromise or fear. Test every counsel against God's Word. In family conflicts or worldly pressures, trust the Holy Spirit's discernment rather than panic.
Satan hires voices — discern and stand firm.
Jesus, tempted in the wilderness and betrayed by a false kiss, willingly laid down His life. His resurrection grace gives us boldness to reject fear-based shortcuts.
4. Persevere Until Completion Brings Glory to God
Nehemiah 6:15–16
The wall was finished in 52 days. Enemies lost confidence, recognising "this work had been done with the help of our God."
Supporting Scriptures:
Philippians 1:6 — "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
Galatians 6:9 — "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
Life Application: In a world of broken relationships, divided congregations, and chaotic societies, your faithful rebuilding — whether of family unity, church health, or community good — will testify to God's power. Finish what He started.
Completion silences critics — press on!
Christ completed the ultimate work on Calvary, dying for the world's salvation. His exceeding grace now flows to us so our lives declare God's glory.
5. Guard Against Infiltration and Division
Nehemiah 6:17–19
Even after success, nobles leaked information to Tobiah, who used intimidation and false reports. Nehemiah stayed vigilant.
Supporting Scriptures:
Romans 16:17 — "Watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way."
James 3:16 — "For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice."
Life Application: Families fracture through divided loyalties, churches suffer from gossip networks, and communities weaken via hidden agendas. Pay attention to what circulates around you. Promote unity in Christ.
Success invites new tactics — remain watchful in grace.
Jesus knew Judas' betrayal yet washed his feet and died for all, modelling sacrificial love that overcomes division.
Beloved, in this month of Exceeding Grace, rise above opposition. The same God who helped Nehemiah strengthens your hands today. Keep building!
