Topic: Paul's Transforming Encounter: Chosen, Blessed, and Empowered in Christ
Text: Ephesians 1:1–23
Greetings, beloved in Christ. I am Bishop Samson Amajene, a servant of Christ from Grace Gospel Church. Today we turn to Ephesians 1:1–23, where the Apostle Paul writes with profound authority and tenderness to the saints in Ephesus and to us, the faithful in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul's very name means "little" or "small" in stature. Yet this once-persecutor of the church became mighty in the power of the Holy Spirit. As he testifies in Philippians 3:5–6, he was "circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless." Ordained not by the will of man but by the Lord Jesus Himself on the Damascus road, Paul was lifted from darkness into the marvellous light to become a mouthpiece of the Gospel of peace. His life declares: it is not physical stature, human strength, or worldly education that matters, but a heart completely transformed by Christ.
In this powerful chapter, Paul reminds us of God's intentional divine visitation upon our lives. Here are five condensed, deeply expressed expository points to inspire, edify, comfort, and empower you today as we build families in faith.
Five Expository Points
1. Divine Appointment: Called by Grace, Not by Accident
God has chosen you before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). You are no mistake — you are intentionally His.
Supporting Scriptures:
Jeremiah 1:5 — "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…"
Romans 8:28–30 — "…those whom he foreknew he also predestined…"
Life Application: In today's fractured world, where families fracture under pressure, churches divide over differences, and communities grow suspicious of one another, remember your divine appointment. Treat your spouse, children, and fellow believers with the dignity of God's chosen ones.
Chosen in Christ — repeat it: "I am intentionally His!"
This echoes Jesus Christ's willingness to die for you. While we were yet sinners and enemies, He laid down His life (Romans 5:8). Let that love flow through you to heal broken relationships today.
2. Abundant Spiritual Blessings: Every Need Supplied in Christ
"Blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ" (Ephesians 1:3).
Supporting Scriptures:
2 Peter 1:3 — "His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life…"
Philippians 4:19 — "My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus."
Life Application: Families today often chase material success while starving spiritually. In your home, church, and community, shift focus to these heavenly blessings — prayer, unity, forgiveness, and joy. Model contentment and generosity amid worldly comparison and division.
All blessings are already yours in Christ — claim them daily!
Jesus, who left heavenly riches to become poor for our sake (2 Corinthians 8:9), invites us to live from His fullness, building secure families anchored in eternal provision.
3. Adoption and Acceptance: Beloved Sons and Daughters
"Adopted us as his sons through Jesus Christ… to the praise of his glorious grace" (Ephesians 1:5–6).
Supporting Scriptures:
Romans 8:15–17 — "You received God's Spirit when he adopted you as his own children…"
Galatians 4:6–7 — "Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts…"
Life Application: In a world where rejection, abandonment, and identity confusion tear families and communities apart, embrace your full acceptance in the Beloved. Forgive quickly, welcome the outsider, and speak affirming words in your household and church.
Accepted in the Beloved — live loved and love boldly!
Jesus willingly died the death of the rejected so we could be forever accepted. Let His sacrificial love transform how we treat one another.
4. Redemption and Forgiveness: Set Free to Live Anew
"In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins" (Ephesians 1:7).
Supporting Scriptures:
Colossians 1:13–14 — "He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness…"
1 Peter 1:18–19 — "You were redeemed… with the precious blood of Christ…"
Life Application: Bitterness and unforgiveness poison families, split churches, and fuel global conflicts. Release offences today. Practise radical forgiveness in your marriage, parenting, and fellowship, mirroring Christ's mercy in a revenge-driven culture.
Redeemed and forgiven — walk in freedom!
Christ's blood was shed willingly for your complete redemption. His cross bridges every divide.
5. Sealed with the Holy Spirit: Guaranteed Inheritance and Power
"Sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance" (Ephesians 1:13–14). Paul prays for enlightened hearts to know this hope, riches, and power (Ephesians 1:18–19).
Supporting Scriptures:
2 Corinthians 1:21–22 — "He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us…"
Ephesians 4:30 — "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed…"
Life Application: In uncertain times — economic pressures, moral confusion, and relational breakdowns — live with confident hope. Build family altars of prayer, disciple your children, strengthen church unity, and reach communities with this assured hope.
Sealed by the Spirit — secure and empowered!
Jesus rose victorious, sending the Holy Spirit so we too can live powerfully. His death and resurrection secure our future.
Beloved, this divine visitation is for you and your family right now. Rise up as Paul did — from limitation to limitless impact. Make disciples of all nations, counsel and strengthen families, and develop leaders for God's Kingdom.
May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ fill you with wisdom and revelation as you walk in these truths today.
