Topic: Parental Blessing

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord [that is, accept their guidance and discipline as His representatives], for this is right [for obedience teaches wisdom and self-discipline]. Honor [esteem, value as precious] your father and your mother [and be respectful to them]—this is the first commandment with a promise—so that it may be well with you, and that you may have a long life on the earth." — Ephesians 6:1–3 (AMP)

Bishop Samson Amajene emphasized the significance of parental relationships. He noted that while certain scriptures can have double meanings, this particular passage directly addresses the vital bond between biological parents and their children. Bishop Amajene reminded the congregation that every child should recognize their existence as a precious gift from the Creator, bestowed through their biological parents.

In a broader context, he acknowledged that "parents" may also refer to spiritual leaders — such as pastors or mentors — who guide and nurture the faith of their congregants. In many church settings, these leaders are seen as spiritual parents, providing essential guidance and teaching.

Bishop Amajene stressed that every child must understand the authority their biological Christian parents hold, as they are accountable to God. He urged children to realize that their parents are the Lord's representatives, expected to set a parental example through both their words and actions.

Two Expectations That Lead to a Third

Firstly, children are called to obey their parents in the Lord — which means adhering to the Word of God as it is taught. Bishop Amajene lamented that disobedience has become more common, noting that disrespecting one's parents constitutes a direct affront and a violation of the authority God has ordained.

He emphasized the necessity of honoring, revering, and respecting parents — stating that raising one's voice against them brings shame and disgrace rather than honor. He encouraged children to honor their parents at any age, to care for them, and to celebrate them — regardless of their faith — because doing so is simply the right thing to do.

The Power of the Parental Blessing

Bishop Amajene reminded the audience that the blessings awarded to them by their parents will follow them as they grow and have children of their own. He asserted that the most vital gift one can receive from their parents is their blessing — not material possessions or education.

He explained that no fasting or prayer is needed to receive this blessing; it is inherent, as the Scripture states: "so that it may be well with you, and that you may have a long life on the earth." These blessings pave the way for one's future. The Bishop urged the congregation to seek their parents' blessings, prayers, and counsel — regardless of past grievances.
