Hindrances to Prosperity: Disobedience to God's Word

Today's Thoughts — Hindrances to Prosperity
Tuesday, June 5, 2024 · Reported by Bishop Samson Amajene
Topic: Disobedience to God's Word
1 Samuel 15:22–23 (NIV) — "To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king."
The Bishop, in his message, emphasised the topic of disobedience to God's Word. He highlighted that disobedience to God's Word is a significant hindrance to receiving blessings from the Lord. The Bishop mentioned that God views disobedience as witchcraft, stubbornness, or idolatry, and it could lead to rejection by God.
Three Levels of Disobedience
Explaining further, the Bishop pointed out three levels of disobedience observed in human behaviour:
- Reluctance to obey outright
- Agreeing to obey but later refusing
- Initially not obeying but eventually doing so
He noted that Jesus recommended the last attitude, saying: "I will not do it — but did it later."
Disobedience Deteriorates Relationships
Furthermore, the Bishop discussed how disobedience can deteriorate relationships, highlighting the example of Queen Vashti's disobedience that led to the collapse of her marriage.
Obedience Is Key to Prosperity
The Bishop emphasised that obedience to God's Word — whether personal revelation (Rhema) or the written Word (Logos) — is crucial for prosperity. The message stressed the importance of heeding God's instructions promptly, citing instances from biblical stories where immediate obedience averted disasters.
The Bishop encouraged the congregation to seek divine guidance like the sons of Issachar, who discerned the right actions at the right time — 1 Chronicles 12:32.
In conclusion, the Bishop reiterated the significance of hearing and obeying God's Word for prosperity and avoiding unnecessary adversities.
