Topic: Faith That Moves Mountains: Trusting God When Life Gets Tough
Introduction
We all go through seasons when life feels overwhelming — when problems pile up and solutions seem far away. In those moments, it is easy to feel powerless or alone. But Jesus gives us a powerful message in Mark 11:22–24: our faith, even when it is small, can make a real difference.
Background of the Passage
This story happens just after Jesus enters Jerusalem. He is with His disciples, and on their way He curses a fig tree that is not bearing fruit. The next day, the disciples see the tree has withered and they are amazed. Jesus uses this moment to teach them — and us — about the incredible power of faith and prayer.
1. Have Faith in God — Mark 11:22
Imagine Jesus pausing, looking at His friends with kindness, and reminding them where real strength comes from.
Jesus starts with something simple but life-changing: put your trust in God — not in your own abilities, not in luck, but in the One who loves you and is always with you.
"Without faith it is impossible to please God." — Hebrews 11:6
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart…" — Proverbs 3:5
Life Application: When you are worried or uncertain, pause and remind yourself: God, I trust You. Even a short, honest prayer like that can bring peace and help you refocus on what really matters.
2. Speak to the Mountain — Mark 11:23
"If anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in their heart but believes… it will be done for them." — Mark 11:23
Jesus is not just talking about literal mountains — He is talking about the big, scary problems in our lives. He is saying that with faith, we can face anything, no matter how impossible it seems.
"If you have faith as small as a mustard seed… nothing will be impossible." — Matthew 17:20
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." — Philippians 4:13
Life Application: Think about the mountains in your life — maybe it is a health issue, a broken relationship, or a financial struggle. Bring those to God in prayer. Speak in faith over your situation, and do not be afraid to ask God for big things.
3. Pray with Confidence — Mark 11:24
"Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." — Mark 11:24
See Jesus encouraging His friends, inviting them to pray boldly and trust deeply.
Jesus is teaching us to pray with confidence, believing that God hears us and cares about our needs. He wants us to trust that God is already working, even before we see the results.
"If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you." — John 15:7
"But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt…" — James 1:6
Life Application: When you pray, imagine God's answer is already on the way. Thank Him even before you see the change. Let your faith show in your words and actions — live with hope and expectation.
Conclusion
Jesus' words in Mark 11:22–24 remind us that faith is not just for "spiritual giants" — it is for all of us, in the middle of our everyday struggles. No matter how big your mountain is, God is bigger. Trust Him, pray boldly, and watch Him work in your life.
"Lord, I bring my mountains to You today. I choose to trust You over my fears, to pray boldly over my circumstances, and to believe that You are already at work. Increase my faith, and let me live each day with the confidence that nothing is too hard for You. In Jesus' name. Amen."
