Text: Nehemiah 4:1–23
Dear beloved in Christ, I am Bishop Samson Amajene, a servant of Christ from Grace Gospel Church. Welcome to May: Our Month of Exceeding Grace. In this special season, we celebrate the abundant, overflowing favour of God that empowers us to rise above every challenge. Let us draw fresh strength and inspiration from the story of Nehemiah. Around 445 BC, Nehemiah, a Jewish official serving in Persia, received divine favour and permission to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the city's ruined walls. This project was far more than physical reconstruction — it represented God's deep desire to restore His people both physically and spiritually through earnest prayer, heartfelt unity, and faithful obedience to His Word.
In Nehemiah chapter 4, when the enemies Sanballat and Tobiah heard about the rebuilding efforts, they became furious, greatly enraged, and began to mock and ridicule the Jews. They plotted attacks and tried to instil fear and discouragement. Yet Nehemiah responded with powerful prayer, encouraged the people, positioned them strategically, and armed the workers so they could build with one hand while holding a weapon in the other. What a powerful, timeless picture for every believer today! No matter how fiercely the enemy opposes Kingdom work, our God fights for us and releases His exceeding grace to ensure victory. Here are five deeply encouraging expository points drawn from this passage to inspire, edify, comfort, and positively impact your life wherever you are in the world.
Five Expository Points
1. The Enemy's Rage: Opposition Arises When You Step into Your Calling
When Sanballat heard that the people were building the wall, "he was angry and greatly enraged, and he jeered at the Jews" (Nehemiah 4:1). The enemy always reacts with intense fury whenever God's people step forward to restore what has been broken — lives, families, churches, or entire communities. Satan hates any progress that advances the Kingdom of God.
Supporting Scriptures:
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." (John 10:10)
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers…" (Ephesians 6:12)
Life Application: In today's world, family members may mock your sincere faith journey, church brethren may criticise your God-given vision, or colleagues in the community may disdain your bold stand for righteousness and integrity. Social media and worldly voices frequently ridicule believers who are trying to rebuild broken walls of morality, purpose, and godly character. Yet remember this powerful truth: their anger and opposition often reveal that your mission is threatening the forces of darkness. God's exceeding grace is available to sustain you through every season of resistance.
Connection to Christ: Our Lord Jesus Christ faced the ultimate opposition — betrayal by friends, false accusations, and the shame of the cross — yet He willingly laid down His life for the salvation of souls across all generations. His triumphant victory over death and the grave assures us that no form of opposition can ultimately stop God's beautiful restorative work in our lives. In this month of exceeding grace, keep building, beloved. Your wall of destiny and purpose is steadily rising higher!
2. The Power of Prayer: Turn Mockery into Momentum
Nehemiah refused to argue or retaliate in the flesh. Instead, he lifted a powerful prayer: "Hear, O our God, for we are despised… Do not cover their iniquity" (Nehemiah 4:4–5). This prayer shifted the entire atmosphere from discouragement to fresh determination and progress.

"Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me." (Psalm 50:15)
"Pray without ceasing." (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
Life Application: In our families, silent treatments and harsh words can cause deep emotional wounds. Within churches, gossip and criticism often stall important ministries and initiatives. In communities and the wider world, division, hatred, and conflict prevail in many places. Yet, following Nehemiah's example, we should commit every insult, every attack, and every challenge to God in sincere prayer. Offer prayers of recompense and trust Him to judge righteously while you remain focused on the assignment at hand. His exceeding grace will turn every setback into a setup for greater momentum.
Connection to Christ: Jesus, even while facing the agony of the cross, prayed with compassion, "Father, forgive them." His ongoing intercession secures our salvation and daily strength. Today, He continues to intercede for us (Hebrews 7:25), transforming our battles into powerful testimonies of victory through exceeding grace.
3. United We Stand: Work Together with Vigilance
The people "had a mind to work" (Nehemiah 4:6), and Nehemiah wisely stationed families together for both construction and defence (verses 13–18). They worked with swords by their sides — half building while the other half remained alert and ready.

"Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up." (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10)
"Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:12)
Life Application: Our modern world is filled with fractured families, divided churches, and polarised communities that desperately need the power of unity. Instead of tearing one another down through words, criticism, or social media, let us intentionally link arms in prayer, support, and shared purpose. Support your pastor, encourage your spouse, mentor young people, and stand in solidarity with persecuted believers around the globe. God's exceeding grace flows richly where His people dwell together in unity.
Connection to Christ: Jesus did not die for isolated individuals but for a united Body — the Church. His precious blood reconciles us to God and to one another. In Him, we celebrate victory not as lone warriors but as one loving family empowered by exceeding grace.
4. Remember the Lord: Courage Over Fear
Nehemiah boldly encouraged the people: "Don't be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families!" (Nehemiah 4:14). Keeping their focus on God's greatness silenced fear and released fresh courage.

"The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear?" (Psalm 27:1)
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)
Life Application: Fear paralyses countless people today — fear of failure in family responsibilities, fear of rejection in church service, or fear of persecution in society. Economic pressures, rapid cultural shifts, and personal attacks often make us want to give up. In such moments, we must deliberately fix our eyes on the mighty God who parted seas and raised Jesus from the dead. His exceeding grace provides the courage we need to press forward.
Connection to Christ: Jesus endured the suffering of the cross, despising the shame, for the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2). He willingly died so that we could live fearless and victorious lives. Celebrate this truth — He has overcome the world (John 16:33) and releases exceeding grace to every believer!
5. Finish Strong: The Wall Will Be Completed
Despite ongoing threats, the work continued, and God granted supernatural success. We are reminded, "Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 1:6).

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9)
Life Application: In our world of broken homes, struggling churches, and chaotic societies, many people have sadly abandoned their "walls." But you — whether parent, leader, or everyday believer — must keep going. Your steadfast obedience inspires others and demonstrates God's power. The Lord is actively restoring ruins globally through faithful servants who rely on His exceeding grace.
Connection to Christ: Jesus completed the ultimate work of salvation on the cross and declared, "It is finished!" (John 19:30). Because He finished His assignment perfectly, we can finish ours with confidence. His resurrection power and exceeding grace enable us to celebrate daily victories.
Beloved friends scattered across the nations, in this Month of Exceeding Grace, no opposition — whether from family misunderstandings, church conflicts, community pressures, or global challenges — can prevail against you. Satan may stir up mockery and plots, but hold tightly to God's rhema word spoken to your heart: "Go and make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:19). Pray fervently, work diligently, stand united, remember the Lord, and finish strong. His exceeding grace is more than enough for every situation you face.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the victory we have in Jesus Christ and for Your exceeding grace that sustains us. Strengthen every reader facing opposition today. Fight for them as they build for Your Kingdom. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
