Dragged Away

By Bishop Samson Amajene

Today's Thoughts — Special Study

Saturday, September 21, 2024  ·  By Bishop Samson Amajene

Text: James 1:13–15 (NIV)

Topic: Dragged Away

"When tempted, no one should say, 'God is tempting me.' For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." — James 1:13–15 (NIV)

Martin Luther wisely noted: "You cannot keep birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair." In life, we may not be able to control the tempting thoughts that arise from the Devil, our environment, or the media. However, we do have the power to choose whether or not to dwell on these thoughts or act upon them.

The reality is that while we cannot prevent wrongful thoughts and desires from entering our minds, we can resist allowing these destructive influences to take root and draw us away from the presence of Christ.

Many Christians struggle with joy because they focus on wrong desires. They may become discouraged because they have not yet received certain blessings — such as a dream job, home, car, or fulfilling relationships — leading them to default to feelings of perplexity, discouragement, or even depression. This misplaced focus can cause profound spiritual suffering.

Studies have shown that desiring the wrong things is often at the root of sin, suffering, and sadness. Shifting your sense of joy to a future event — believing you must wait for a blessing or miracle — is not only unnecessary but can also lead to despair.

Today, I declare that this is a day of victory and joy for you. Engage with uplifting, anointed messages or gospel music that will elevate your spirit. Reach out to someone who can encourage you with their words or perspective. Watch inspiring content that lifts your heart and creates a vision of hope for your future.

Ultimately, the responsibility does not lie with Satan or even God — it lies with you. You possess the God-given power of choice, enabling you to determine what you allow into your life in accordance with His will.

"Lord, I pray today that I will not be dragged away by sinful desires or negative thoughts that steer me away from the path of righteousness. Strengthen my will and keep my mind fixed on You, in Jesus' name. Amen."
