Cleansing and Separation – Guarding the Purity of God's House

By Bishop Samson Amajene

June: Our Month of "Divine Visitation and Building Families in Faith"

Wednesday, June 10, 2026  ·  By Bishop Samson Amajene, Grace Gospel Church

Main Topic: Cleansing and Separation – Guarding the Purity of God's House

Text: Nehemiah 13:1–31

Beloved, Nehemiah 13:1–31 brings the book to a powerful close. After great revival, dedication, and joy, Nehemiah returned from Persia to discover serious compromise had crept in during his absence. The people had allowed ungodly alliances, Tobiah the enemy was living in the temple chambers, and the Levites were neglected. With holy zeal, Nehemiah cleansed the house of God, restored order, and called the people back to separation and obedience. This chapter reminds us that divine visitation must be guarded with vigilance. What God builds, we must protect!

Here are five powerful expository points to stir your heart today:

Five Expository Points

1. Separation from Ungodly Influences

Nehemiah 13:1–3

The people discovered it was written that Ammonites and Moabites should not enter God's congregation.

Supporting Scriptures:

2 Corinthians 6:17 — "Come out from them and be separate."

Psalm 1:1 — "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly."

In today's world, families mix harmful influences, churches compromise for popularity, and communities blur godly boundaries. Yet God calls us to holy separation. Jesus willingly separated Himself from heaven's glory and died on the cross to make us a pure people belonging to God.

Life Application: Examine relationships and influences in your home and church. Gently separate from anything that opposes God's Word.

"Come out and be separate" — this protects divine visitation.

2. Courageous Cleansing and Restoration

Nehemiah 13:4–9

Nehemiah threw out Tobiah's belongings and cleansed the chambers.

Supporting Scriptures:

James 4:8 — "Cleanse your hands… and purify your hearts."

2 Timothy 2:21 — A vessel of honour, sanctified and useful.

Many families tolerate compromise, churches allow enemies to occupy sacred spaces, and leaders stay silent. Nehemiah's boldness challenges us. Jesus cleansed the temple with zeal and gave His life on the cross to cleanse our hearts forever.

Life Application: Boldly remove every "Tobiah" — hidden sin or wrong influence — from your family, heart, and ministry this week.

"Cleansing brings restoration" — make room for God's presence.

3. Restoring Honour to God's Servants

Nehemiah 13:10–14

The portions for Levites, singers, and priests had been neglected.

Supporting Scriptures:

Galatians 6:6 — "Let him who is taught the word share all good things."

1 Timothy 5:17 — Honour elders who labour in word and doctrine.

In a self-centred age where people use and discard leaders, families neglect spiritual covering, and churches undervalue servants, honour must be restored. Jesus poured out His life for the Church so that those who serve faithfully would be supported.

Life Application: Appreciate and practically support your pastors, teachers, and family spiritual leaders.

"Restore what was neglected" — sustains family faith.

4. Renewed Commitment to Sabbath and Covenant

Nehemiah 13:15–22

Nehemiah rebuked Sabbath-breaking and called the people back to covenant.

Supporting Scriptures:

Hebrews 10:25 — Not neglecting to meet together.

Exodus 20:8 — "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy."

Today, families are too busy for God, churches treat sacred things casually, and societies run without rest. Jesus kept the Sabbath perfectly and died to bring us into true rest in Him.

Life Application: Recommit your family to regular worship, rest, and covenant-keeping with God.

"Renew your covenant" — invites fresh divine visitation.

5. Vigilance Against Compromise

Nehemiah 13:23–31

Nehemiah's absence created a vacuum; his return brought cleansing.

Supporting Scriptures:

1 Peter 5:8 — "Be sober-minded; be watchful."

Ephesians 6:11 — Put on the whole armour of God.

In a world of spiritual neglect, broken families, and drifting churches, constant vigilance is needed. Jesus died for our souls so we could live watchful, holy lives until He returns.

Life Application: Stay present and prayerful in your family and leadership. Regularly check the "temple" of your heart and home.

"Watch and guard" — preserve what God has built.

Dear friend, in this Month of Divine Visitation and Building Families in Faith, learn from Nehemiah 13: never allow compromise to steal what God has restored. Cleanse, separate, restore, and remain vigilant. As you do, your family, church, and community will remain a dwelling place for God's glory.

May the Lord give you courage to guard your house with zeal!
