Blossoming in Mission Through God's Strength in Our Weakness

Good morning, beloved brothers and sisters in Christ! Today, as we celebrate the third Sunday in our special month of "Blossoming in Mission," we draw powerful inspiration from the life of Gideon. This story beautifully illustrates how God takes fearful, doubtful, and weak people — just like many of us — and empowers them to blossom in their God-given mission.

1. The Problem: Sin Leads to Oppression and Brokenness — Judges 6:1–10

The children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord by worshipping idols and forgetting God. As a result, the Lord allowed the Midianites, Amalekites, and people of the East to oppress them for seven years. These enemies destroyed crops, stole livestock, and left nothing for Israel. The people became so impoverished and terrified that they hid in dens, caves, and strongholds.

Because of their sin, they were completely broken. Yet in their suffering, the children of Israel cried out to the Lord. God first sent a prophet to remind them of His past faithfulness and their unfaithfulness.

Life Application: Sin in our personal lives, families, churches, or communities always brings oppression, fear, division, poverty of spirit, and hiding. But crying out to God in repentance opens the door to deliverance. Examine your heart this week. Where have you been "hiding"? Cry out — your blossoming begins with repentance.

2. The Call: God Chooses the Unlikely and Speaks Life into Weakness — Judges 6:11–24

While Gideon was secretly threshing wheat in a winepress — hiding in fear — the Angel of the Lord appeared and declared:

"The Lord is with you, mighty warrior!"

Gideon questioned God: "If the Lord is with us, why has all this happened? Where are all the miracles?" He saw himself as the least important person from the weakest clan. Yet the Lord replied: "Go in the strength you have… Am I not sending you?"

Gideon asked for a sign; the Angel miraculously consumed his offering with fire. Gideon built an altar and called it "The Lord Is Peace." That night, God told him to tear down his father's altar to Baal first — obedience begins at home.

Life Application: In today's world of comparison and self-doubt, hear God speaking over you: "The Lord is with you, mighty one!" Your weakness is the perfect place for God's strength to blossom. Stop disqualifying yourself. Say daily: "I go in the strength I have — because God sends me."

3. The Preparation: God Confirms and Reduces So That He Alone Gets Glory — Judges 6:25–40; 7:1–8

Gideon, still doubtful, asked for two fleece signs — and God patiently answered both. Then 32,000 men gathered, but God said the army was too big. 22,000 fearful men went home. From the remaining 10,000, God chose only 300 men who lapped water alertly. God reduced the numbers so Israel would not boast in their own strength.

Life Application: Obedience starts at home before public mission. Gideon had to tear down idols in his own father's house first. Begin your mission by removing idols — fear, anger, pride, unforgiveness — in your household and personal life. Don't despise small beginnings or limited strength. Surrender what you have — God will use it mightily.

4. The Victory: God Wins Through Faith, Not Might — Judges 7:9–25

With only 300 men carrying trumpets, empty jars, and torches, Gideon attacked at night. They broke the jars, blew the trumpets, shouted "A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!", and held up their lights. The Lord caused the vast Midianite army to turn on one another in panic. A great victory was won — not by human power, but by God's strength in human weakness.

Life Application: In your family conflicts, church challenges, or community needs, choose praise, holy living, and bold declaration of God's Word. Watch Him confuse the enemy and bring peace and victory.

5. Victory Comes When We Praise, Shine Our Light, and Trust God to Fight

Gideon's 300 used unconventional weapons: trumpets (praise), broken jars (transparency), and torches (light). They simply stood firm and shouted. God did the rest. This is the pattern for blossoming in mission — not by might, but by the Spirit of the living God.

• Zechariah 4:6 — "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord."
• 2 Corinthians 12:9 — "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."
• Romans 8:37 — "In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us."

Repetition to Drive the Message Home

Beloved, whatever "Midianites" — fear, failure, oppression, or impossibility — you face today, remember Gideon. Cry out. Listen to God's call. Obey in the small things. Trust Him with your little strength. You are called to blossom in mission this March and beyond — not by your might, but by the Spirit of the living God.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for Gideon's story. Forgive our sins, calm our doubts, and empower us to blossom in mission. Use our weakness to display Your strength in our families, church, and communities. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen!
