Sub-topic: From Broken Walls to Victorious Rebuilding: How Ordinary Surrender Ignites Divine Revival
Beloved in Christ, good morning! This is Samson Amajene, a servant of Christ from Grace Gospel Church, bringing you Today's Thoughts. In this month of April, as we celebrate our victory through Jesus Christ, we turn to the Book of Nehemiah chapter 1:1–11. Here we meet a man just like us — not an angel, not a superhero, but Nehemiah son of Hachaliah, a Jewish official serving in the Persian citadel of Susa (Shushan) around 445 BC, the same empire where Esther and Mordecai had lived.
Nehemiah inquired about the state of his brethren and Jerusalem. The report was heartbreaking: the remnant who survived exile were in great trouble and disgrace; the wall of Jerusalem was broken down, and its gates burned with fire. Upon hearing this, Nehemiah sat down, wept, mourned, fasted, and prayed for days before the God of heaven. He confessed the sins of Israel, remembered God's covenant of love, and boldly asked for success as he prepared to act.
Friends, Nehemiah was an ordinary man who presented his heart to God in total surrender. The same God who used him can use you and me mightily in these last days — if we will only give ourselves fully to Him.
Five Condensed but Deeply Expressed Expository Points
1. A Caring Inquiry Sparks Burden
Nehemiah 1:1–3
"The words of Nehemiah son of Hachaliah: In the month of Chisleu in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Shushan, Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem. They said to me, 'Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.'"
Nehemiah did not ignore the distant suffering of his people. In a foreign palace, he asked specific questions. His genuine concern turned information into a holy burden. In today's world, where families scroll past each other's pain, churches focus inward, and communities grow indifferent to broken lives around them, God calls us to ask, to listen, and to let the brokenness of others touch our hearts.
Life Application: In your family today, stop ignoring strained relationships or unspoken hurts — gently inquire and show you care, just as Nehemiah did.
Scripture: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

2. Weeping and Prayer Precede Action
Nehemiah 1:4
"When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven."
Nehemiah did not rush to fix things in his own strength. He sat down, wept, mourned, fasted, and poured out his soul in prayer. True revival always begins on our knees. When we see broken walls in our families (strained relationships), churches (division and complacency), communities (violence, poverty, moral decay), and our world (wars, injustice, lost souls), our first response must be heartfelt prayer, not criticism or despair.
Life Application: In the church, resist indifference to division — gather together, weep in prayer, and let God move first before taking action.
Scripture: "I can do all this through him who gives me strength." (Philippians 4:13)
Weeping and prayer precede action — weeping and prayer precede action! A surrendered heart turns burden into breakthrough!
3. Confession and Remembrance of God's Faithfulness
Nehemiah 1:5–7
"Then I said: 'LORD, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father's family, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.'"
In his prayer, Nehemiah confessed the sins of Israel — including his own household — and reminded God of His promises. This teaches us humility. In our divided world, where blame-shifting is common even among believers, victory comes when we confess our part, remember God's unfailing love, and stand on His Word.
Life Application: In your community and the wider world, stop blame-shifting for moral decay or injustice — humbly confess where we as God's people have failed and remember His covenant of love.
Confession and remembrance bring restoration — confession and remembrance bring restoration! Prayer and obedience rebuild what is broken!
4. Ordinary People in God's Hands Become Instruments of Restoration
Nehemiah 1:8–10
"Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.' They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand."
Nehemiah was a cupbearer, not a prophet or priest, yet God used his surrendered heart to rebuild walls and restore a nation both physically and spiritually. Beloved, you and I are ordinary people too. When we surrender fully, God can use us to repair broken relationships in our families, bring unity in our churches, foster love in our communities, and point the world to hope.
Life Application: In your personal life, examine your heart and present yourself fully to God — He will use your ordinary life to restore what is broken around you, just as He did through Nehemiah.
Ordinary surrender releases extraordinary power — ordinary surrender releases extraordinary power! In these last days, total surrender releases God's mighty power through you!
5. Burden Leads to Bold Faith and Expectant Prayer
Nehemiah 1:11
"Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favour in the presence of this man." (Now I was cupbearer to the king.)
Nehemiah ended his prayer with a specific request for success and favour before the king. His burden drove him to faith-filled action. This mirrors the heart of our Lord Jesus Christ, who saw our ruined condition — sin's broken walls separating us from God — and was moved with compassion. Jesus did not merely weep; He willingly laid down His life on the cross for the salvation of souls, rising victorious so that we might live in triumph. Through Him, every broken wall can be rebuilt!
Life Application: In our families, churches, communities, and the world, let the burden for broken lives drive you to bold, expectant prayer and compassionate action — because Jesus cared enough to die for the lost and has already won the victory for us.
Burden leads to bold faith — burden leads to bold faith! Jesus Christ has already won the ultimate victory — now live in it!
Dear friend, wherever you are in the world — whether facing personal ruins, family struggles, church challenges, or global darkness — take heart! Our God specialises in restoration. Just as He moved through Nehemiah's tears and prayers to rebuild Jerusalem, He wants to bring victory through your life today. Celebrate this April by surrendering afresh to Jesus, the One who died and rose for your complete salvation. Let your heart care, your knees bend in prayer, and your hands work in obedience. Victory is yours through Christ!
